The studio opens up to Solomon Bentley leaning on the desk in the Review studio. He wears a joyous smirk.
SOLOMON BENTLEY:
Hello everyone, and welcome to the Shining Road Review, presented by POLLOVISION, where chicken meets the eye! We’ve had one of the most exciting nights here at the Bushidokan in front of a massive crowd of 4,000 fans. There was an electric feeling in the arena and the action went well past midnight. Kai, give us your breakdown.
The camera pans to the well-dressed analyst in the light grey business suit.
KAI HARRISON:
We had a double main event that featured four of the greatest rivals in Shining Road. First, Takeshi Morimoto and Ikki Yanagi squared off and this match went all the way to the judges. Morimoto is one of the most athletic guys in the business and used that advantage early on in the first couple rounds, nearly ending the match a few times. But then Ikki picked up the pace, got the crowd going, and he won 2 out of the last 3 rounds. Ultimately, it went to the judges and Morimoto squeaked out the victory with a 2-1 split decision.
SOLOMON BENTLEY:
It was an impressive scene and those two went all out. But in the main event, we had two national champions of freestyle wrestling in Masayoshi Arimoto and Makoto Ueno. The latter of course represented Japan on the world stage. This match ended in dramatic fashion in the fourth round when Ueno used an arm triangle chokehold on Arimoto.
KAI HARRISON:
“Mr. Meiji” Masayoshi Arimoto fought with a lot of pride and took it to the limit. He was undersized going into this match as Ueno qualifies as a member of the superheavyweight division. But Makoto Ueno also happens to be a world-class wrestler and when he gets down on the mat, he just can’t be beat.
SOLOMON BENTLEY:
Tonight we also saw the King of Lions Champion, Julian Cutlass, take on his protégé and Pollomania Lucha Libre Scramble Champion, Jimmy Winner, under kickboxing rules. While many expected Cutlass to end this match quickly given his kickboxing background, it took him until the eighth round to finally put away his rather spirited opponent. Jimmy Winner showed off his athleticism and spirit, didn’t he, Kai?
KAI HARRISON:
Jimmy’s one of those guys who rises to the occasion and I’m glad it sounds like he’s gonna spend more time with us. But the Blazin’ King had him outmatched in skill and experience in this one and finally got Jimmy to lower his guard and nail him with a roundhouse kick that kept Jimmy on the ground for the count.
SOLOMON BENTLEY:
Also on the show, we got some news regarding upcoming events. First things first, on 7/1 next week at the Bushidokan will feature a series of boxing matches. Sheik Spectre will take on a member of the NOVA division, Akira Nakamura, who has a Karate and Judo background. We’ll also see two guys who teamed up tonight square off against one another. Zen Hayashi will put on the gloves against the young MMA fighter, Kazuo Inoue. Finally, we'll have a former light heavyweight champion in boxing when Masahiro Fujita takes the stage against Kishin Nozaki.
KAI HARRISON:
Akira Nakamura is going to have a major opportunity against Sheik Spectre, but the Sheik is a skilled boxer in addition to a deathmatch champion. It won’t be easy. We don’t see much of Kazuo Inoue around here, since he’s usually training for other promotions, but Zen Hayashi is tall and has some good striking. I can’t wait to see it. Now, when it comes to Fujita, he's one of the top strikers in the world. Nozaki will have his hands full.
SOLOMON BENTLEY:
It won’t be easy… indeed. Now, as we have already publicized, on the 7/15 supershow Yoshihiro Sawamura – the reigning winner of the last World Pro-Wrestling Tournament – will face off against Hayato “Falcon” Hamada in the main event. We now know that we’ll have two more MMA fights on the show when Toru Ishii will fight against the newcomer Takeda “Sniper” Izumi. Finally, “King Temba” Damien Turlan will take on Masayoshi Arimoto, the leader of Shining Road’s sekigun!
KAI HARRISON:
Sawamura vs. Hamada we all know is bound to be exciting. Sawamura-san is a world-class judoka and Hamada is one of the best MMA fighters around. I’m excited to see “Sniper” Izumi after hearing a lot about his Muay Thai bouts in places like Bangkok and Phuket and elsewhere around the globe. The wily veteran Ishii will be no slouch, however, and is going to leverage his experience.
SOLOMON BENTLEY:
Speaking of weight, what do you think about Damien Turlan versus Masayoshi Arimoto?
KAI HARRISON:
Another very interesting matchup. It’s “King Temba” vs. “Mr. Meiji” and they could not be more different stylistically. You’re taking a huge puncher versus a national champion freestyle wrestler. Two very different styles, but only one winner. What a slate of matches!
SOLOMON BENTLEY:
As we look down the Shining Road, there is a lot to be excited about. After 7/15, the fighting just doesn't stop. We have been informed that on 7/22, we will have the inaugural Nova Cup MMA tournament amongst four of the NOVA division member. The winner will graduate from the NOVA division and, as if that’s not enough, earn a spot in the World Pro-Wrestling Tournament!
KAI HARRISON:
I can’t stress how much of an honor it is to fight in the World Tournament. Guys spend years upon years just earning consideration to compete. As a young up and comer to get a spot? There’s a lot on the line for the inaugural NOVA Cup, no bones about it.
SOLOMON BENTLEY:
No bones, indeed. Well as we come to the end of the show tonight, Kai, give us your Fighting Spirit Award Winner.
KAI HARRISON:
For me, it’s gotta be Jimmy Winner. No one expected him to last as long as he did and even though he was out-classed he made it into the final round with the Blazin’ King.
